In language arts we will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction literature to interpret and respond to both orally and in writing. Students will receive direct instruction in reading strategies designed to improve reading comprehension of more challenging texts. In collaboration with our eighth grade Holocaust unit, we will read the popular adolescent book Daniel’s Story, a fiction story inspired by real experiences of children during the Holocaust. Students will also participate in smaller book groups where they read books of their choice based on a selected theme. Also, the eighth graders will conference with me each trimester to set personal goals in order to meet independent reading objectives. It is expected that students have an independent book with them throughout the year to develop as readers and explore various genres. If you click the "book list" link above, there is a list of classics that may be helpful.
